Oil Change in Tomball, TX
Full synthetic, synthetic blend, conventional or high mileage. We use the oil your engine calls for, at our shop on Calvert Rd in Tomball.
Synthetic and Conventional Oil Changes in Tomball
An oil change is the cheapest thing you can do to keep an engine healthy. Old oil breaks down with heat and miles, and in a Texas summer, with a lot of stop-and-go driving, that happens faster than most people think.
We do full synthetic, synthetic blend, conventional and high mileage oil changes on cars, trucks and SUVs. We go by what your owner’s manual calls for, not whatever’s cheapest on the shelf, and we put in a new filter every time.
Our customers say we’re one of the best shops in Tomball, and that starts with the small jobs done right. If we spot something else while your car’s in, like a leak or worn brakes, we’ll tell you and you decide. On a BMW, an oil change is a good time to check for oil leaks. Which Oil Does Your Car Need?
Full synthetic, synthetic blend, conventional or high mileage? Here’s what each one is, who it’s for, and how often you need it.
Full Synthetic Oil Change
Full synthetic oil is made to hold up to heat and last longer between changes. A lot of newer engines are built for thin synthetic oil like 0W-20, and the owner’s manual will say if it’s required.
How many miles can you go on a full synthetic oil change?
Many newer cars on full synthetic go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between changes. Your owner’s manual or oil life monitor has the real number for your car.
How often should you change synthetic oil?
Go by the manual, but change it sooner if you tow, do lots of short trips or sit in stop-and-go traffic. Most manuals call that “severe service.”
Is a full synthetic oil change worth the cost?
It costs more than conventional per change, but you change it less often, so the yearly cost is closer than it looks.
Full synthetic vs conventional oil: which is better?
Synthetic resists breaking down in heat and keeps engines cleaner. Conventional is fine for engines designed for it, but needs changing more often.
Good to know: If your manual says synthetic, it has to be synthetic. Using the wrong oil can matter for warranty claims.
Synthetic Blend Oil Change
Synthetic blend is a mix of synthetic and conventional oil. It gives some of synthetic’s heat protection for less money, and plenty of engines are fine on it.
Conventional oil vs synthetic blend: what’s the difference?
A blend handles heat better than straight conventional and costs less than full synthetic.
How often should you change synthetic blend oil?
Usually somewhere between conventional and full synthetic. Your manual or oil life monitor sets the interval.
Can I use synthetic blend instead of full synthetic?
Only if your manual allows it. If it calls for full synthetic, stick with full synthetic.
Is synthetic blend good for trucks?
A lot of trucks and SUVs that don’t require full synthetic run well on a blend, especially if they tow now and then.
Good to know: Check the oil weight in your manual (like 5W-30). The weight matters as much as the type.
Conventional Oil Change
Conventional oil is regular mineral oil. It’s the cheapest option and works fine in engines built for it, mostly older cars and some trucks.
What is a conventional oil change?
It’s an oil change with standard, non-synthetic motor oil, plus a new filter.
Is conventional oil cheaper than synthetic in the long run?
Conventional costs less per change but breaks down faster, so it needs changing more often.
How often should you change conventional oil?
Older engines on conventional oil usually need it sooner than synthetic, often every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Your manual has the number.
Can I switch from conventional to synthetic?
Yes, any time, as long as the synthetic meets the spec and weight in your manual.
Good to know: Classic engines often have their own oil needs, like zinc for flat-tappet cams. Ask us if you run a classic.
High Mileage Oil Change
High mileage oil has extra additives meant to help older seals, cut down small leaks and reduce oil burning. Most brands make it for engines with 75,000 miles or more.
What’s the difference between high mileage oil and regular oil?
It’s the same job; the oil just has seal conditioners and extra cleaners for older engines.
High mileage oil or full synthetic?
You can have both: many high mileage oils come as full synthetic. Pick the type your manual calls for, in a high mileage version.
Does high mileage oil stop leaks?
It can slow small seepage from tired seals. It won’t fix a real leak, like a bad gasket or a cracked oil pan.
Does high mileage oil cost more?
Usually a little more than the same oil in a standard version.
Good to know: If you’re topping off oil between changes, tell us. Burning or leaking oil is worth checking.
Oil Change Light and Oil Life Percentage
Most newer cars track oil life on the dash. The oil life percentage is the car’s estimate, based on how you drive: engine revs, temperature and short trips. It doesn’t test the oil itself.
At what oil life percentage should you change your oil?
Most manuals say to change it around 15% or less, or when the reminder comes on. Don’t run it to 0%.
Why is the oil change light still on after an oil change?
The reminder has to be reset after the service. If it’s still on, it wasn’t reset.
How long can you drive with the oil change light on?
The maintenance reminder means it’s due soon, so book it in. A red oil can light is different: that’s low oil pressure, so pull over and turn the engine off.
Is oil life percentage accurate?
It’s a good guide for normal driving. If you tow or drive hard in heat, changing a bit early doesn’t hurt.
Warning: Red oil can light = low oil pressure. Stop the engine and check the oil level before driving further.

Oil Change Questions
The questions people ask us about getting an oil change at Brix Auto.
How often should I get an oil change?
Go by your owner’s manual or your car’s oil life monitor. Many newer cars on synthetic oil go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between changes. Older engines and conventional oil usually need it sooner. Towing, short trips and stop-and-go traffic all count as harder use.
Is synthetic oil worth it?
If your car calls for synthetic, yes, it’s not optional. If it doesn’t, synthetic still holds up better to heat and lasts longer between changes, which helps in Texas heat. It costs more per change than conventional.
Can I switch from conventional to synthetic oil?
Yes. You can switch to synthetic at any time, as long as it meets the oil spec and weight in your owner’s manual.
What does high mileage oil do?
High mileage oil has additives meant to help older seals and cut down on small leaks and oil burning. It’s made for engines with a lot of miles on them.
Why is my oil change light on after an oil change?
The maintenance reminder has to be reset after the oil change. If it wasn’t reset, it stays on. A red oil can light is different: that’s low oil pressure, so stop driving and get it checked.
How long does an oil change take?
An oil change itself is a quick job. Call 936-661-2675 to check when we can fit you in, or drop the car off and we’ll call you when it’s done.
