Brakes squeaking, grinding or feeling spongy? We check and repair brakes on cars, trucks and SUVs at our shop on Calvert Rd in Tomball.
Brake Repair and Brake Checks in Tomball
Brakes wear every time you use them, and they warn you before they go: squeaking, grinding, a soft pedal, pulling to one side or a shake when you stop. Don’t wait on those.
We’re a full brake shop. We replace brake pads and rotors, calipers, brake lines and master cylinders, fix brake fluid leaks and scan ABS warning lights. We measure everything first, so you only pay for what actually needs doing. Catching worn pads early usually saves the rotors.
Driving a classic with drum brakes? We do drum to disc brake conversions too. Looking for a brake mechanic near you in Tomball? Call 936-661-2675 and tell us what your brakes are doing. A hard brake pedal on a late-model Silverado or Sierra is often the brake assist; more on our Chevy repair page.
What Your Brakes Are Telling You
Squeaking, grinding, shaking or a soft pedal each point to a different brake repair. Here’s what each one fixes and the signs that tell you which one you need.
Brake Pad Replacement
Brake pad replacement is the most common brake repair. Pads wear down every time you stop. Most have a small metal wear indicator that squeals when the pad gets thin. That squeal is the warning to replace them before they damage the rotors.
At what thickness should brake pads be replaced?
New pads usually have around 10–12 mm of material. Most shops recommend replacing them at about 3 mm (1/8 inch).
How often do brake pads need replacing?
There’s no fixed mileage. Stop-and-go traffic wears pads much faster than highway driving, so the pads should be measured at each service.
How much does brake pad replacement cost?
Pads only is the cheapest brake job. Wait until they grind and it usually becomes pads and rotors.
Why are my brakes squeaking when the pads are good?
Squeaks can also come from dust, rust on the rotors after rain, or missing anti-squeal shims and grease. A check tells you which.
Signs: Squeal when braking · pads look thin through the wheel · brake warning light on some cars.
Brake Pads and Rotors Replacement
Rotors are the metal discs the pads clamp onto. They wear too, and when pads wear down to metal, they cut into the rotors. If you hear grinding or feel a shake through the pedal or steering wheel, you probably need brake pads and rotors replaced together.
Why are my brakes grinding when I stop?
Grinding usually means the pad material is gone and metal is rubbing on metal. Get it checked right away. It wears the rotors fast and makes stopping distances longer.
What are the symptoms of warped rotors?
A pulsing brake pedal or a steering wheel that shakes when you brake. The rotor surface has worn unevenly, so the pads grab and release as it turns.
How much do new brake pads and rotors cost?
More than pads only, because the rotors are replaced too. Rotors can sometimes be machined instead, if they’re still above their minimum thickness.
When do brake rotors need replacing?
Rotors get replaced when they’re below their minimum thickness, cracked, or too uneven to machine. The minimum thickness is stamped on the rotor, so it’s measured, not guessed.
Signs: Grinding · shaking or pulsing when braking · grooves or a lip on the rotor edge.
Brake Caliper Replacement
The caliper is the clamp that squeezes the pads against the rotor. Calipers can stick, seize or leak. A stuck caliper makes the car pull to one side and can overheat that wheel.
Signs you need a brake caliper replacement
The car pulls to one side when braking, one wheel is much hotter or dirtier with brake dust than the others, a burning smell, or brake fluid leaking near a wheel.
How much does a brake caliper replacement cost?
Depends on the car and whether it’s one caliper or a pair. Pads are usually replaced at the same time if they’ve worn unevenly.
How long does a brake caliper replacement take?
Often a same-day repair. The brakes are bled afterwards to remove any air from the system.
Is it the caliper or just the slide pins?
Sometimes the caliper itself is fine and the slide pins are just dry or seized. Cleaning and greasing them is a much cheaper fix.
Signs: Pulling to one side · one hot or smoky wheel · uneven pad wear.
Brake Fluid Flush
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point and corrodes brake parts from the inside. A brake fluid flush replaces the old fluid throughout the system.
How often do you need a brake fluid flush?
Check your owner’s manual. Many carmakers set it by time, often every 2 or 3 years, because the fluid absorbs moisture whether you drive or not.
Is a brake fluid flush really necessary?
Yes, when it’s due or when a test shows high moisture. Old fluid is one of the causes of a soft pedal and corroded brake lines.
What causes a spongy brake pedal?
Air in the lines, old fluid, a leak, or a worn master cylinder. A pedal that sinks to the floor needs checking before you drive it.
How do I know I have a brake fluid leak?
Wet spots near a wheel, a dropping fluid level or a pedal that sinks all point to a leak. It usually comes from a brake line, hose, caliper or the master cylinder, and it gets fixed before anything else.
Signs: Soft or spongy pedal · dark brake fluid · flush overdue in the owner’s manual.
Drum to Disc Brake Conversion
Many classic cars and trucks came with drum brakes. A drum to disc brake conversion swaps them for modern disc brakes, which stop harder, handle heat better and are easier to service.
What’s in a drum to disc brake conversion kit?
Kits include rotors, calipers, brackets and lines for your car. Front-only conversions are common, since the front brakes do most of the stopping.
Do I need a new proportioning valve for a disc brake conversion?
Disc and drum brakes need different pressures. Most conversions need a new proportioning valve, and often a new master cylinder, so the front and rear brakes stay balanced.
How much does a drum to disc brake conversion cost?
Depends on the car, front only or all four wheels, and whether the master cylinder and booster are changed too.
Disc brakes for a restomod
If the car is getting more power, like an LS swap, upgrade the brakes at the same time.
Signs: Drum brakes that fade on long stops · classic getting more power · restomod build.

Brake Repair Questions
Squeaks, grinding, a spongy pedal and the ABS light, answered.
Why are my brakes squeaking?
Most often it’s the wear indicator, a small metal tab that squeals when the brake pads are getting low. It can also be dust, rust after rain or glazed pads, but a squeak that doesn’t go away needs checking.
Why are my brakes grinding?
Grinding usually means the pads are worn through and metal is rubbing on the rotor. Stopping takes longer and the rotors get chewed up fast, so get them checked as soon as you can.
Why is my brake pedal spongy?
A soft or spongy pedal usually means air in the brake lines, a brake fluid leak or a worn master cylinder. It’s a safety problem, so don’t keep driving on it.
Why is my ABS light on?
The ABS light means the anti-lock system has logged a fault, often a wheel speed sensor or its wiring. Your normal brakes usually still work, but ABS may not. We scan the code and find the cause.
How do I know if I need new brake pads or rotors?
Squeaking points to worn pads. Grinding, a shaking pedal or a lip on the edge of the rotor usually means the rotors need replacing too. We measure both before recommending either.
How much does it cost to replace brake pads and rotors?
It depends on the vehicle and whether it needs pads only, or pads and rotors. Call 936-661-2675 with your year, make and model.
