Check engine light on or flashing? We read the codes, find the cause and fix it, at our shop on Calvert Rd in Tomball.
Check Engine Light & Car Diagnostics in Tomball
The check engine light (some cars call it the service engine soon light) means the car’s computer found a fault and saved a code. It can be something small like a loose gas cap, or something that gets expensive if you ignore it, like a misfire.
A code tells us which system has a problem, not which part to replace. So we do a proper car diagnostic: read the code, test the system and tell you what’s wrong before any work starts. Then we fix it, from sensors and vacuum leaks to engine repair.
If the light is flashing, the engine is misfiring. Ease off and get it checked as soon as you can. Failed your emissions test because of the light? We find the cause and fix it so you can retest. Need a car diagnostic near you in Tomball? Call 936-661-2675. We see a lot of check engine lights on BMWs and Mercedes-Benz cars too.
What Your Check Engine Light Means
A check engine light can mean anything from a loose gas cap to a misfire that damages the catalytic converter. Here’s what the most common check engine light problems mean and how urgent each one is.
Solid Check Engine Light
A solid check engine light (some cars say service engine soon) means the car’s computer has found a fault and saved a code. It’s not an emergency, but don’t ignore it: small faults like a bad sensor turn into bigger repairs, and the car won’t pass a Texas emissions inspection with the light on.
What does a solid check engine light mean?
A fault has been logged in the engine, emissions or fuel system. The code points to the system; a proper car diagnostic finds the part.
Solid vs flashing check engine light: what’s the difference?
Solid means get it checked soon. Flashing means a serious misfire: slow down and get it looked at right away.
Why is my car shaking with the check engine light on?
Shaking with the light on usually means a misfire, from a coil, plug, injector or vacuum leak. Get it checked before it starts flashing.
What should I do if the check engine light comes on while driving?
If the car drives normally, you can keep going and book it in. If it loses power, overheats or shakes badly, pull over.
Urgency: Get it checked within days · keep driving only if the car feels normal.
Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing check engine light means the engine is misfiring badly. Unburned fuel goes into the exhaust and can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid heavy acceleration and get it checked as soon as you can.
What does a blinking or flashing check engine light mean?
A severe misfire: one or more cylinders aren’t firing properly. It’s the most urgent check engine light.
Why does my check engine light flash, then stop?
The misfire may only happen under load or at certain speeds. The code is still stored, so the cause can be found.
Why did the check engine light stop flashing but stay on?
The misfire has eased but the fault is logged. It still needs checking. The cause hasn’t gone away.
Can I drive with a flashing check engine light?
Only gently and only as far as you have to. Driving hard with a flashing light is how a misfire turns into a catalytic converter replacement.
Urgency: Same day · drive gently · don’t tow or accelerate hard.
Check Engine Light After a Gas Cap Problem
A loose, damaged or missing gas cap is one of the most common reasons for a check engine light. The fuel tank is part of a sealed system (the EVAP system), and the car tests it for leaks.
What code does a loose gas cap set?
Gas cap problems usually set an EVAP code such as P0457 (fuel cap loose or off) or P0455 (large leak).
How do I reset the check engine light after a loose gas cap?
Tighten the cap until it clicks. The light usually turns off by itself after a few days of normal driving if the cap was the problem.
How long does the light take to reset after fixing the gas cap?
The car has to re-run its leak test, which can take several drive cycles. If the light is still on after a week, it’s something else.
What if a new gas cap doesn’t fix the light?
If the cap’s seal is cracked, a new cap fixes it. If the code comes back with a good cap, the leak is elsewhere in the EVAP system, like a hose or purge valve.
Urgency: Low · tighten the cap first · get it checked if the light stays on after a week.
Engine Misfire
An engine misfire is when a cylinder doesn’t fire properly. The engine runs rough, shakes at idle or hesitates when you accelerate. Codes P0300 to P0308 point to a misfire: P0300 is random, and the last digit of the others is the cylinder number.
What causes an engine misfire?
Worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil, a clogged injector, a vacuum leak or low compression. Testing narrows it down to the actual part.
What are the symptoms of an engine misfire?
Rough idle, shaking, hesitation, loss of power, worse fuel economy, and a check engine light that may flash.
How much does it cost to fix an engine misfire?
Plugs or a coil are a small repair. Low compression from internal engine wear is a much bigger one, which is why testing comes before parts.
What does a misfire code tell you?
A misfire code tells you which cylinder, not why. Swapping a coil to another cylinder and seeing if the misfire follows it is a common first test.
Urgency: Soon · same day if the light is flashing.
P0420 Code
P0420 means “catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)”. The oxygen sensors are reporting that the catalytic converter isn’t cleaning the exhaust as well as it should. It’s one of the most common check engine codes and it will fail an emissions inspection.
What does the P0420 code mean?
The downstream oxygen sensor is reading too close to the upstream one, so the computer decides the converter isn’t working well enough.
What causes a P0420 code?
A worn catalytic converter, a faulty oxygen sensor, an exhaust leak near a sensor, or an old misfire that damaged the converter.
How do you fix a P0420 code?
Check for exhaust leaks and test the oxygen sensors before replacing the converter. If a misfire caused it, fix that first or the new converter will fail too.
What is bank 1 on a P0420 code?
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. On a 4-cylinder engine there’s only one bank.
Urgency: Not an emergency · must be fixed to pass a Texas emissions inspection.
Check Engine Light and Texas Inspection
Since January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires safety inspections for most non-commercial vehicles. Emissions testing still applies in the Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin and El Paso areas, including Harris and Montgomery counties. Gas vehicles 2 to 24 years old have to pass every year, and a check engine light that’s on will fail the test.
Will check engine light fail inspection in Texas?
Yes, in emissions counties. The test reads the car’s computer, and a lit check engine light is a fail.
Do I need the light fixed for a Texas emissions test?
Tomball and most towns around it are in Harris or Montgomery County, and both require emissions testing. Waller County doesn’t. Get the light diagnosed and fixed before your inspection.
Can I clear the codes before an inspection?
It doesn’t work. Clearing codes also resets the car’s readiness monitors, and the test can reject the car until they’ve run again. If the fault is still there, the light comes back.
How do I pass the Texas emissions test after a repair?
Fix the cause, then drive normally for a few days so the readiness monitors complete. Then the car is ready to test.
Urgency: Fix before your inspection is due · allow a few days of driving after the repair.

Check Engine Light Questions
What the light means, whether you can drive on it, and whether it fails a Texas inspection.
Why is my check engine light on?
The car’s computer has saved a fault code. Common causes are a loose gas cap, a bad oxygen sensor, a misfire, a vacuum leak or a catalytic converter problem. Reading the code is the first step.
Why is my check engine light flashing?
A flashing check engine light usually means the engine is misfiring right now. Unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, so get it checked straight away.
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, it’s usually fine to drive it to a shop soon. If it’s flashing, or the car is shaking or losing power, avoid driving it.
Will a check engine light fail inspection in Texas?
Yes, in counties that still test emissions, like Harris and Montgomery. A lit check engine light fails the emissions test, so get it fixed before your inspection is due.
Why is my check engine light on after an oil change?
Something may have been knocked during the service, like an oil cap not tightened or a sensor plug bumped loose. Have the code read to know for sure.
How much does it cost to diagnose a check engine light?
Reading the code is quick. Finding the actual failed part can take testing, depending on the fault. Call 936-661-2675 and we’ll tell you what’s involved for your car.
